Great South Bay Music Festival: A Long Island Summer Staple

When it comes to Long Island’s biggest annual music celebration, Great South Bay Music Festival takes the crown. Held at Shorefront Park in Patchogue, NY, this four-day event transforms the waterfront into a vibrant gathering spot for around 20,000 attendees each year. With a scenic backdrop of grassy fields and rocky shores, festivalgoers of all ages come together to experience live music, local art vendors, and a strong sense of community — all set to the sounds of rock, reggae, and jam bands.

In 2018, I had the opportunity to attend as a representative of WRHU 88.7 FM, Hofstra University’s Marconi Award-winning radio station. While there, I interviewed up-and-coming artists and helped promote future shows for The Paramount, one of Long Island’s top live venues, as a member of their seasonal Street Team.

I attended Day 2 and Day 3 of the festival that year, catching high-energy performances from reggae icons like Sublime with Rome, Dirty Heads, and Less Than Jake, alongside jam scene favorites like Umphrey’s McGee, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, and Papadosio.

One standout moment? Interviewing Bohemians, a Long Island-based alternative rock band on the rise. Their energy was electric, and if you’re into catchy, danceable tracks with a gritty edge, I definitely recommend checking them out — their music is available on all major platforms.
