Music Industry Experiences

First Day of Women’s History Month

March is here, and with it comes one of my favorite times of year—Women’s History Month. It’s a chance to celebrate all the amazing women who’ve shaped our world and to give flowers (literally or figuratively) to the trailblazers who made space for the rest of us.

One space where women have seriously left their mark? Independent music. From gritty punk to dreamy indie pop, women have been shaking things up for decades—writing, producing, performing, and totally flipping the script on what music can sound and feel like.

The roots of this go deep. Back in the ‘70s, punk rock came in loud and raw, and women were right there in the mix. Think: The Runaways, X-Ray Spex—women who didn’t ask for a seat at the table, they just built their own stage. By the time the ‘80s and ‘90s rolled around, the indie scene was buzzing with female voices who weren’t afraid to get weird, loud, soft, or whatever they wanted. Bands like Sonic Youth and Sleater-Kinney weren’t just making noise—they were making history.

These days, women are still out here making serious waves in the indie music scene. Artists like Mitski, St. Vincent, and Angel Olsen are doing their thing—blending genres, breaking hearts, and building fanbases that get it. And it’s not just about being center stage—more women are calling the shots behind the scenes too, launching their own labels, managing their own tours, and creating spaces that feel more authentic, inclusive, and empowering.

That said, the road’s far from smooth. The industry’s still super male-dominated, and too many women still face discrimination, gatekeeping, and straight-up harassment—whether they’re on stage, backstage, or in the studio. And for women of color and LGBTQ+ women, the challenges are even steeper, with layers of systemic bias making it harder to break through.

Listen to the playlist!

As we roll into Women’s History Month, it feels right to shine a spotlight on the women who’ve shaped—and are still shaping—the indie music scene. Whether you’re discovering a new artist or hyping up a longtime fave, every stream, share, and show of support helps push things in the right direction. The more we uplift women in music, the more space we create for future voices to rise and do their thing.

To keep the vibes going, I put together a Spotify playlist featuring some of the incredible women who are pushing boundaries and redefining what independent music can sound like. Trust me—you’ll want this in your rotation.

So here’s to the women who’ve paved the way, the ones currently shaking things up, and the ones still finding their sound. Let’s celebrate them, support them, and keep working toward a music industry that’s more inclusive, more equitable, and way more exciting because of it.
