Ballin’ on a Budget: My First Trip to Las Vegas ($600)

My very first trip to Las Vegas was a four-day whirlwind — and I pulled it off with just $600 in my pocket. At the time, I was a full-time college student, and about ten of us from my program received a $600 educational grant to attend the Las Vegas Music Summit. Even though most of us were under 21, we still managed to have a blast without breaking the bank. Here’s how I made the most of every dollar:

  • ✈️ Airfare: $300 roundtrip (NYC to Vegas)
Flights were the biggest chunk of my budget, but I found a roundtrip deal for $300. That was half the budget gone — but absolutely worth it.
  • 🏨 Hotel: $50/night split = $50 total
Thanks to a partnership between the Summit and the Downtown Grand Hotel, we snagged discounted rates at just $50 per night — split between four people. My share came out to a super manageable $50 for the whole stay at a 4-star hotel right near downtown.
  • 🚗 Rideshares: $60 total
Vegas rideshares were refreshingly cheaper than NYC. We mostly walked everywhere local and only used rideshares to and from the airport and major destinations like the Strip. We also split costs among the group — including the Lyft to and from campus back in New York — landing us around $60 in total transport.
  • 🍔 Food & Drink: $80
From quick bites to casual sit-downs, Vegas had budget-friendly eats for every craving. Since I wasn’t 21 yet, I skipped the pricey cocktails, which helped keep my food and drink spending around $80.
  • 🎟️ Entertainment: $60
Though gambling wasn’t on the agenda, we still got to soak in Vegas’ vibrant culture. I visited the Neon Museum and Mob Museum, each with student-friendly admission around $30. One night, we were even invited to a free concert at Brooklyn Bowl, which meant I could treat myself to a couple of fun souvenirs with the budget I had left.

Whether you’re heading to Vegas for business or fun, this trip proved that it is possible to make the most of it — even with a limited budget. With a little planning, smart spending, and an open mind, Vegas can be both exciting and affordable.
